This is a rails-to-trails and follows the old railroad bed that was used to haul timber from high in the Sacramento Mountains down to the mills in Alamogordo. The grade was kept moderate so the locomotives could handle it. At points the railbed has to swing nearly 180 degrees to climb around the contour lines of the canyon. There is water in the Canyon so engines had a source of water for steam.
