The closest place to Alamogordo with abundant water that attracts bird, are the Holoman Lakes. These are ponds that hold the water from the Air Force Base of the same name. These ponds are in the middle of the Tularosa Basin, a very dry desert so this scene is quite unusual for the area. You can see from the white salt deposits at the edge of the lake that this water is very alkaline. However, there are always some birds on the water from Buffleheads diving in the deep areas to puddle ducks such as Norther Shovelers to Snowy Plovers on the salt flats.
