Obituary | Obituary Christian Schwab. Bucyrus News Journal Friday May 8, 1896 d: 5 May 1896 Tuesday evening between three and five o'clock, Chris Schwab, who resided two miles north of Chatfield, suicided at his home by shooting himself through the heart. Schwab was a man of about fifty, was well liked by his neighbors and friends, who were greatly shocked to learn of his death and the means by which it was brought about. Schwab had been seated with several friends in front of his house, discussing various topics, whe he suddenly left them and went into the house. Securing his shot gun he went to his room upstairs and a moment later the group of friend and his family were startled by the loud report of a gun. Investigation was at once made and Schwab was found lying in his room dead. The charge had entered his breast and passed through his body, penetrating the heart on the way, his death being instantaneous. No cause was given for the rash act and his neighbors and friends supposed he was abundantly satisfied with this world. He leaves a wife and eight children. Coroner Bland was notified of the suicide and in company with A.J. Hazlett went over by rail this morning. Gathering up the facts and making a simple statement of them was all that was found necessary. Schwab was a native of Germany, born Dec 27, 1847. In 1875 he was married to Catharine Fail who survived him. The children range in age from one to twenty years old. On Sunday and Monday Schwab had been drinking heavily, but seemed to be sobering up when he took his own life. He laid down on the bed and placing the muzzle of the gun to his heart he sprung the trigger with the wiping stick. He always said if he ever undertook such a deed he would make a good job of it which he did. He resided at Chatfield quite a number of years in the northwest part of the township on a small place of 6 or 8 acres of land, he worked by day, huxtered, pedled fish and did other work. His brother tried the suicide route by Rough on Rats about a month ago, but failed to accomplish it. The funeral and burial will took place at the M. E. church north of his home in the border of Seneca county, at 1 pm Thursday. |
