He brought his parents, Catherine and John Joseph Smith to America in 1786 also. John A. Smith Biography states "To avoid military service he (John Jacob) came to America in the sping of 1788 and purchased a small farm in Perry Co. PA." From the biography in HCCO1881 "He was an ardent member and local preacher of the United Brethren Church and a man highly respected for his many virtues" From Tracking V38N8 Jodie Robinson quotes " A copy of the original church record reveals that John Jacob and his wife had no money to pay for their passage to America, and so they were brought over by a man by the name of Schneider. They both worked for him for five years to pay him back for their passage. " |
