Shared note | According to Kiesecker's declaration, one Gerberich of Altfeld turned back [from the journey to Rotterdam]. Boatman Selig asserts having heard from him that in Bingen, every boatman is paying fifty kreuzer the head. Perhaps he returned to fetch his daughter Apollonia, of whom it is reported in the Fruedenberg Govermental Protocols of 16 May 1754: Apollonia Gerberich, who already two years ago was bought off by her father and through an unfortunate event was brought into misery, asks for freedom from vassalage. Her property still amounts to 123 florins. [Pennsylvania German Pioneers/Fruedenberg Governmental Protocols] The date of this notation shows she was still in Altfeld when her father and half-siblings arrived in Philadelphia two years earlier when he first bought out her servitude for the journey. Conjuncture can be made she was sold back again by her father to have additional finances for the voyage. The Gerberich who turned back in 1754 could have been her brother Andreas who saw a way to help finance his trip. It could not have been her father as noted. She in all probably came here with her brother Andreas, arriving aboard the Phoenix on 1 Oct 1754. Also on this voyage was Johannes Michael Kleinfelter, her future spouse. There are some lineages purporting Apollonia to have been an "Indian princess". This is untrue. How the tale came into being is unknown. Her date of death is unknown but was by 1780. The marker has been too worn to read for over a century and church records do not reflect her death. (contribued by GerbLady - FindaGrave.com) |
